What grapevines taught me about life, business and public speaking
I’m not a gardener. But I decided that gardening was a skill I wanted to learn. I bought a little piece of land and started planting. But there were these vines – these grapevines – that just overtook my plot, and frankly, they overtook me.
I couldn’t get rid of them. Every time I thought I removed them from an area, they just sprouted up – stronger than ever.
The gardeners around me were doing fine. I started to wonder what I was doing wrong. Or if I was just lacking something – a skill – that was needed for gardening.
But then something so simple, but so helpful, happened. I had a conversation with my dad about vines. And he told me how long it took him to get rid of the vines at his house. The diligence. And persistence.
Before this conversation, I didn’t think about persistence. I just thought I was doing something wrong. And I gave up.
But after I heard how hard it was to get rid of vines, and the time commitment, I felt empowered. I could do it now. I knew what to expect. I wasn’t doing something wrong. I just hadn’t kept at it long enough.
While I was standing there, digging out the grapevine roots, I thought about speaking.
So many people underestimate the time it takes them to prepare for a speech.
And they put in the prep time they think it takes, take the stage, and get disappointing results. And then they think they’re doing something wrong. Or that they’re just not good at speaking.
But sometimes, it’s just a matter of knowing what it takes to succeed.
That’s why I’ve created a free video series to help you understand how to create, prepare for and deliver a conversational keynote. And I’ll share that wth you soon. When I do, I want you to be ready. I’m only sharing it for a limited time.
So, while it’s free, I encourage you to watch it. Here’s what I plan on sharing…
1. The secret behind great keynotes
2. 5 mistakes you’re making on stage
3. The formula for delivering jaw-dropping speech openers.
4. Creating, preparing and delivering a keynote – the complete system
It’ll go live soon. But I wanted you to be the first to know. Look out for it.
And about those grapevines? I don’t know if I successfully removed them. Time will tell. But… I know I got a lot further than I would have if I didn’t know what to expect. And, even if they do come back, I’ll be better able to prepare for them. It takes practice. Just like anything else. But….at least I know that now I’m practicing the right skills.
